There is no doubt that electric vehicles have been quite popular in recent years because of its fuel-efficient technology. There are 2 types of electric vehicles: The all-electric battery-powered (BEV), which needs to be plugged in to refuel, and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that also relies on battery but has a backup gas tank.
If you have an intention of buying an electric car or even if you’re just a curious gal or fella, below are some pros and cons of having an electric vehicle. This list also intends to help you decide which between an all-electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid is best suited for you and your lifestyle.

Pros
- Economical and Energy-Efficient – It will save you more money since it doesn't use any fuel. Electricity is cheaper than gas. To store power at the wheels, EVs also convert about 55% to 60% electrical energy from the grid.
- Minimal Maintenance Required - It requires less maintenance because of its simple construction. There are only a few moving parts to check, clean, and replace. Oil change is also not necessary.
- Quiet and Quick – The electric motor provides a quiet and smooth operation. It also has a continuous torque (axle-twisting power) that gives stronger acceleration.
- No Tailpipe Pollutants – Electric cars are eco-friendly. They do not have an exhaust system, which means zero emission.
- Limited Driving Range - Most affordable electric cars only have about a typical 75 to 120 miles of range. However, there are few expensive models that can go for about 200 to 300 miles. It is best to plan your travel and make minimum stopovers.
- Higher Cost - EVs are quite expensive than gas-powered vehicles. They typically range about $25,000 to $40,000. However, some federal and state tax credits or direct rebates may reduce the cost. Also, the car battery may need to be replaced more times than once and large batteries don’t come cheap.
- Long Recharge Time - It takes about 4 to 8 hours to refuel on full charge. Tip: Always remember to charge it before going to bed. There are some public charging stations in some areas.
- Bulky and Space-Consuming - The battery can be a bit large and heavy.
Hybrid Electric Cars
Pros
- Fuel-Efficiency – It can split its power between the gas engine and the electric motor.
- Eco-Friendly – Its tailpipe produces zero emissions, when on full-electric mode. Even when it’s on combustion engine mode, the emissions are remarkably low.
- Longer Range – With its two powertrains, hybrids can go up to 400 miles. Its range can even be longer than diesel- and gasoline-powered cars.
- Convenient Refueling – It can be plugged in to charge the electric motor at home or any public charging station. You can also just refuel the combustion engine in any gasoline station.
- Limited Variety – There are limited models to choose from. Many manufacturers either go on full-electric or just the traditional combustion engines.
- Pricey – Even though hybrids are a bit cheaper than the full-electric ones, they are still quite more expensive compared to traditional vehicles.
