Car brakes are one of the most important parts of any vehicle whether it is a motorcycle, airplane, automobile or train. They are used used to slow down or stop a moving vehicle. The first braking system was first used in horse transport, carriages carried by horses could travel in high speed but horses cannot stop the vehicle from moving.

What is the history of car brakes?
The first cars made by earlier people used the same type of brakes carriages driven by horses used. At the start of the 20th century, cars with high speed were invented which demands for a more effective braking system. Since then, different type of car brakes were invented.

The evolution of brakes has slowed down since the use of disc braking system although several braking systems were added, which has helped make braking more effective and safer. But still, the foundation of the braking system that has been set early in the 1900’s is the basis for today’s braking systems.

What are the different types of car brakes?
Disc brakes were first invented in the 1900’s but were used not later than the 20th century. These types of brakes are popular for its durability and effectiveness most suited for cars, bicycles and motorcycles.

On the other hand, vacuum brakes are ideal for use in trains. Vacuum brake by creating pressure changes in the air inside the brake cylinder. The effect is usually slow, that‘s why trains take more time in slowing down or halting.

Another type of car brake is the drum brake which is largely similar to vacuum brakes. Drum brakes use oil pressure rather than air pressure. It also requires frequent replacement because they do not last long and as such, are not as effective as disc brakes.

Air brakes are another type; they are used in trucks or trains. These brakes are also used in airplanes in monitoring the speed while flying.

Power brakes are used on passenger cars with four different types: vacuum suspended, hydraulic booster, air suspended or electro-hydraulic booster.

The ABS or Anti-lock Brake System was developed mainly for use in aircrafts. These brakes were invented in the 1980’s and are still used presently.

What is the needed maintenance for car brakes?
Maintenance is extremely important in every car’s maintenance program. As such, braking systems of cars nowadays should be periodically checked, and if faulty, replaced right away. You might not want to do the job yourself because you need to ensure that they are in good condition. If your brakes are not in good condition, you are vulnerable to nasty accidents.
