Traveling has always been a fun and relaxing way to spend time with the family while taking a break from work, but everyone has heard horror travel stories due to a vehicle malfunction. You could probably relate to how much inconvenience and displeasure a broken car might cause, especially in the middle of a long trip. To make sure that your much-awaited road trip won’t go the wrong way and become a “vacation gone bad,” here’s a list of things you need to check before hitting the road.
Fluids -- it is always safe to fill up your car to full tank before going on a road trip, no matter how near or far the destination might be. Also check your car’s oil, water, transmission and brake fluids, and coolants to avoid unexpected breakdown. It is also a good practice to check gasoline stations along your way for emergency stopovers.
Tires -- having a spare tire is a must for every travel, but this doesn’t mean that you need to ignore the mounted tires of your car. Ensure that each car tire has enough air pressure and inspect for any wear and tear. If possible, check your tires tread gauge, especially for long trips.
Battery -- check the battery for any leaks, cracks, or loose connections. Make sure that the terminals are clean, tight, and not corroded. While you’re at it, check if there are any loose or worn-out belts and connectors and have them replaced if necessary. It is difficult to tell if a battery is about to die, but a slower engine response when starting your car might be a good indication that the battery must be replaced.
Brakes and steering components -- the last thing you would like to happen on a road trip is a car accident caused by a faulty brake or a malfunctioning steering. Test these components and see if there are any unnecessary pulsations or vibrations. Ensure that you can maneuver and control them smoothly without too much force.
Lights -- aside from lighting the road ahead, lights are your signaling devices for making turns, sudden stops, or stopping during emergencies or hazardous situations. Make sure that all the lights are functioning well and that they are bright and visible.
