October is Fall Car Care month and it’s the perfect time to get ready for winter. When the weather gets colder, a little preparation and preventive care in the fall goes a long way to making driving in the snow and cold a little more bearable. Here are a few quick things you can check on your vehicle to make it run in tip-top condition coming to the fall-winter season.
1. Check your tire pressure
The cold weather certainly affects tire pressure. Low tire pressure impacts everything from vehicle driveability to fuel efficiency. You have to make sure your tires are inflated to your car manufacturer’s recommended levels.
2. Inspect your wipers for wear
Falling snow is pretty but you don't want it building up and limiting your visibility while driving. It’s a good idea to make sure those wiper blades aren't streaking on the vehicle and they’re in good shape. Take a look at the rubber on the blade itself; the rubber should be smooth. If there's any bevelling across the rubber it's time to replace it.
3. Check the tire treads
Take a look to see if your vehicle has sufficient tread on it to make it through the winter. Look for the tire wear bar in between the treads of the tires. If that horizontal wear bar is even with the tread of your tire, it's time to buy new tires.
4. Check the fluid levels
Make sure the coolant is filled to a specified line. Make sure that transmission fluid and power steering fluid are right at the specified line on their respective jugs.
5. Check your air filter
Do a couple of quick snaps off the air filter box so you can access your vehicle's air filter. Pull it out and use a flashlight to shine light through it. If you can't see light through it then it's a good time to replace it. If you live in the areas that get a lot of snow, you might want to consider buying snow tires to better handle the snowy roadways.
